Somi Live at NIROX Sculpture Park
"Critically acclaimed for her “African grooves\, supple jazz sin ging and compassionate social consciousness … both serious and seductive ” by The New York Times\, Somi is known for her wide-ranging v ocal technique and her original blend of modern jazz with African music st yles. The Rwandan-Ugandan vocalist\, composer\, and writer has built an in ternational career of storytelling that gives voice to issues of social ju stice\, transnationalism\, womanhood\, and global constructions of Blackne ss. In 2021\, Somi became the first African woman ever nominated in any of the Grammy Awards' Jazz categories for her 2020 Holy Room a lbum.
On the 27th of March\, Somi will host a concert a t Nirox Sculpture Park to celebrate her latest studio album Zenzile: The Reimagination of Miriam Makeba that she is releasing this month in honor of what would have been the late singer and activist's 90th Birth day. Also featuring an array of special guests\, the concert will be a festive celebration of Miriam Makeba's invaluable musical contributions an d deep commitment to social justice.
The new album is a companion piece to the larger cultural memory work of Somi's original p lay\, Dreaming Zenzile\, which is based on the life of Miriam Ma keba and will open Off-Broadway in New York City in June 2022. Somi has been developing the play for the past seven years and is deeply thankful to The Miriam Makeba Estate\, The Miriam Makeba Foundation\, and Mama Afri ca Cultural & Social Trust for their support and permission to create this work.
