Dung Beetles and other nocturnal species navigate via the Mi lky Way. Recent studies reveal the devastating effects of light pollution on their ability to navigate. Picking up on this thread\, artist Hannelie Coetzee and scientist Bernard WT Coetzee invite you on a dary sky walk and drawing session on 21 June 2022 (the shortest day of the year) to explore our relationship with darkness. The walk will conclude with a blind drawi ng session\, reflecting on dark skies\, pollution\, our fear of the dark\, and how we can consciously use artificial lights\, reducing skyglow so as not to interfere with noctural ecosystems. Hannelie Coetzee is a transdis ciplinary visual artist and innovator with a relational eco-art focus (www .hanneliecoetzee.com). Bernard Coetzee works on the human forces that shap e\, change\, and erode nature – including darkness (www.bernardcoetzee.c om).
PROGRAMME (4 – 8PM):
4PM: Arrive at NIROX Sc ulpture Park’s Gate 3
4:10PM: Welcome with tea and coffee at the W ater Pavilion.
4:30PM: Briefing with the artist and scientist.
5PM: Walk from the Water Pavilion into the reserve (wear walking shoes\, warmclothes\, a thermos\, and headlamp. The terrain can be a bit tricky in the dark\, and there is game).
6:30PM: – 8PM: Blind drawing sessi on with a warm\, hearty soup at the Water Pavilion.
TICKETS: R300 pp
This includes a 3km night hike\, light warm food (vegan friendly)\, tea and coffee\, a drawing demonstration as well as materials for drawing .
